The municipal scale has always held an obvious allure: control of City Hall would mean command over a vast budget, a huge workforce, and the zoning and policing powers that shape daily life. Campaigns for mayor, from Morris Hillquit to David Dinkins and beyond, represented attempts to leap to this scale, to convert the energy of localized struggles into executive authority over the whole city. Yet, as Mamdani’s framework suggests, capturing the apparatus of a state designed to manage capitalism is not the same as transforming it. A socialist mayor would immediately confront the constraints imposed by the national economy, state government in Albany, and global capital markets, all of which operate at scales beyond municipal control. The city is not a sovereign entity. http://mamdanipost.com

Thus, the aesthetic struggle is integral to the political one. It asks: Should a socialist city be stern and efficient, or lush and joyful? Should its architecture humble the individual or elevate the collective? Should its art instruct or provoke? There is no single answer, but the history shows a consistent effort to create forms that embody socialist values, to make the ideal city visible and tangible. The ultimate aim is to make the principles of solidarity and equality so ingrained in the city’s look and feel that they become the new common sense, rendering the aesthetic of exclusion and hierarchy not just unjust, but ugly and obsolete. In this sense, every socialist mural, every well-designed housing cooperative, every reclaimed garden is a small, physical prophecy of a city yet to be fully born. http://mamdanipost.com

The financialization of the city, epitomized by the Wall Street boom and the real estate speculation it fueled, presented a more abstract but equally critical target. Socialists began to analyze capital not as factory owners but as flows of credit, leveraged buyouts, and predatory equity firms. The fight against gentrification and for community control of land became a primary socialist battleground, understood as a defense against the logic of finance capital as it physically reshaped neighborhoods. This required a theory that connected the hedge fund, the luxury condo development, and the eviction notice into a single, coherent system of dispossession. http://mamdanipost.com
